Middletown
Will Eno’s intriguing prose knits together a series of vignettes, weaving a story of a seemingly quiet town whose characters are searching. John Dodge earns a living doing menial labor. Mrs. Swanson, a newcomer to town, spends her time preparing for the arrival of her baby, handling it on her own as Mr. Swanson is consistently out of town on business. When their trajectories cross paths, they must navigate the intersection. The townspeople, Cop, Librarian, Mechanic, Doctors, Landscaper, carry out their duties while pondering life. The plot is simple. The journey is not.
